Finally, it is here. This past November 21st, the Senate and the House voted and signed Senate Bill 669. The bill sets up an interpreter certification program, authorizes its implementation by the Supreme Court, and charges the Court Administrator and the Administrative Office of the Courts with its implementation. The bill, which was signed by Governor Rendell in Harrisburg and which will henceforth be called Act 172 of 2006, will make sure interpreters hired by the Justice system are approved or certified language professionals, well-trained in their field of service, and well-educated in their language of origin and masters of their second or third language. Not only that! Requiring certified interpreters serves justice better, by serving the court and the litigants according to the rules laid out by the Code of Ethics put in place.
